1. Identify three concepts that you think are related to the need for information literacy in a democratic society.
(1) Freedom of information-the ability to access any information available
(2) Right to expression-the freedom to write, blog, and post your thoughts
(3) Hold an opinion without interference-the right to have an opinion and express that opinion without persecution
2. Explain why it is important that information literacy is taught in school.
It is important that students know where to find information on the internet, and how to evaluate that information as reliable or not. It is also important that students know how to ethically contribute to information on the internet, whether it is through blogging or posting video. As the speaker said, the internet is a place of "opportunity and promise" and people should "not be limited." They should feel empowered to express their thoughts and opinions, as long as they do so in a responsible way.
3. Should Wikipedia be used as an information resource in school? Why or why not?
No, I don't believe Wikipedia is a reliable resource for student research. Anyone can contribute to Wikipedia, so the information is not always factual. People can unethically post information they know is incorrect, or they could unknowingly post information that is inaccurate. I believe students should use more scholarly resources to conduct their research.

EDUC 6809 Weekly Reading #1
"Bad and good writing is in the eye of the beholder...It's all in the relationship of the recipient to you."
I chose this quote because I agree with the statement. There is a time and a place for professional writing and for social writing. If I am writing something for my job or a class, I take the time to read and re-read what I have written. I make sure everything is grammatically correct, spelled right, and that is says what I want it to say. On the other hand, if I am sending an email or a text to a friend or family member, it is more casual. I may use abbreviations or shorthand.
"In a book, they go through a lot of details that aren't really necessary...online just gives you what you need, nothing more or less."
I chose this quote because I cringed when I read it. As someone who loves books and loves to read, this surprises me. My favorite thing about books is how detailed they are. A good book can paint such a vivid picture that you feel like you are a part of the story. I understand that we are a culture of instant gratification, we want to know what we want to know right now, but I also think it is important to take the time to appreciate books.
I think I fall somewhere in the middle of being a web evangelist and a traditionalist because I can see the need for both. It is important to be able to read something in print and comprehend it, but we also need to be able to search for information online. I think the solution is a balance of the two.
In the article "How Social Media is Affecting the Way We Speak and Write," it talks about how when email was first introduced, people thought it would destroy our letter writing skills. It didn't destroy our writing skills, it just changed the way we write. Just like the internet is not going to harm our reading skills, it is just changing the way we read. We just need to be open minded.

EDUC 6816 Introduction Post
Hi, my name is Abby. I am from Bridgeport, and I am currently a 4th grade long term sub at Salem Elementary. What I hope to get out of this class is to learn how to help my students become more literate in the 21st century.
I think the video shows us that any piece of information we need is available to us with a simple internet search, but it also shows us that anyone can publish information on the internet as fact. We must be careful and evaluate the source of the information as reliable or not.
I define information literacy as knowing why you need information and where you can find it. It is also being able to evaluate information as factual or not. If you are the one publishing the information, you have the responsibility to do so in an ethical manner, for example, not posting information you know to be false.
The ACRL has a great website, Introduction to Information Literacy, where you can learn about what information literacy is, why it is important, who needs it, and resources to how to incorporate it into your curriculum.

I chose the video Language and Literacy: Teaching Students in the 21st Century because this is what it means to me to be literate. It's not just about reading a book or writing a paper; you can be literate in many different ways and in many different areas.

I chose this joke because it amazes me that people will post ANYTHING and everything on Facebook!
