EDUC 6816 Weekly Reading #1

1.  Identify three concepts that you think are related to the need for information literacy in a democratic society.

(1)  Freedom of information-the ability to access any information available
(2)  Right to expression-the freedom to write, blog, and post your thoughts
(3)  Hold an opinion without interference-the right to have an opinion and express that opinion without persecution

2.  Explain why it is important that information literacy is taught in school.

It is important that students know where to find information on the internet, and how to evaluate that information as reliable or not.  It is also important that students know how to ethically contribute to information on the internet, whether it is through blogging or posting video.  As the speaker said, the internet is a place of "opportunity and promise" and people should "not be limited."  They should feel empowered to express their thoughts and opinions, as long as they do so in a responsible way.

3.  Should Wikipedia be used as an information resource in school?  Why or why not?

No, I don't believe Wikipedia is a reliable resource for student research.  Anyone can contribute to Wikipedia, so the information is not always factual.  People can unethically post information they know is incorrect, or they could unknowingly post information that is inaccurate.  I believe students should use more scholarly resources to conduct their research.

  1. I didn't believe that Wikipedia should be used as a reliable resource for information. People can put inaccuracies on the site and it may not be changed or corrected until it is caught. This may take a long time, if corrected at all.

  2. I tend to look things up on Wikipedia at times and it is usually very informational even though you have to be information literate to determine the validity. I think that using Wikipedia as a learning tool in the classroom for information literacy could help students understand about wikis and the Internet.
