EDUC 6816 Introduction Post

Hi, my name is Abby.  I am from Bridgeport, and I am currently a 4th grade long term sub at Salem Elementary.  What I hope to get out of this class is to learn how to help my students become more literate in the 21st century.

I think the video shows us that any piece of information we need is available to us with a simple internet search, but it also shows us that anyone can publish information on the internet as fact.  We must be careful and evaluate the source of the information as reliable or not.

I define information literacy as knowing why you need information and where you can find it.  It is also being able to evaluate information as factual or not.  If you are the one publishing the information, you have the responsibility to do so in an ethical manner, for example, not posting information you know to be false.

The ACRL has a great website, Introduction to Information Literacy, where you can learn about what information literacy is, why it is important, who needs it, and resources to how to incorporate it into your curriculum.

  1. I like that you added the fact that information literacy is knowing whether something is true or not. I believe that is the most important skill to obtain when dealing with massive amounts of information that our kids see, hear, and interact with daily.

  5. Hello Abigail, I think we had a few classes together, but I agree with the information literacy quote, with so much being posted it's hard to decifer the truth. I also really like you link, and will certainly use it for my students' snior research project. Thank you

  7. Like the quote - "Who dares to teach must never cease to learn." ~John Cotton Dana. I have this desire to teach and fear that I have nothing valid to share. Hence, I'm back in school.

  8. I agree that we must validate information on the Internet and determine if it is a reliable source. Netiquette is an important topic in Business Education.

  9. It's nice to hear that you're concerned with your students' 21st century skills. My daughter will be in 4th grade this year. She's highly computer literate, but not from school. I think she would really enjoy utilizing more computer work into her education.
